DONALD TRUMP: LEADING AMERICA TO RUSSIA

Donald Trump the 45th President of the United States of America has been in office for six months. So far his presidency has been enmeshed in a tortuous struggle to prove that Russia did not meddle in the last November's presidential elections . And I fear that this struggle may determine his entire presidency unless something gives. It is either he finally accepts the current overwhelming evidence that Russia interfered with the elections or his continued effort to deny reality will mare his presidency. Today in America, Russia has become the most mentioned word as it seems to dominate most political discussions.   There are three issues. One has been established by the seven intelligence agencies in the United States and that is, that Russia interfered in America's democratic process last year. Everybody has accepted this fact unequivocally except President Donald Trump who is still ambivalent:"It could be Russia, it could be other countries, nobody knows for sure...

THE RETURN OF PDP FROM THE DEAD: MATTERS ARISING

Many Nigerian political watchers had declared the PDP, one time "largest Party in Africa" clinically dead. Sheriff had made an elaborate preparation for the burial rites. Two things were outstanding: choice of burial rites- Muslim or Christian or traditional; and the removal of the oxygen line on which the Party had been hanging for nearly 14 months now by the 'Judicial surgeons' in the Supreme Court. The 'judicial surgeons' at the first and second referral points agreed with Sheriff and his group of power grabbers that the Party should be allowed to go home in peace having suffered fatal heart attack and massive stroke in close sequence.   The heart attack happened when the game changer Adamu Muazu failed to change the game and despite the huge cash thrown into the game, PDP lost the Presidency, lost the majority in both houses of the National Assembly and lost majority of State Governors to APC. It was a massive heart attack which sent the party to th...

NIGERIA AND THE PARABLE OF THE PLANE ON AUTO PILOT

I understand that when an aircraft reaches cruising altitude, the pilot can transfer the flight to the computer and go to sleep, perhaps only to be woken up when the aircraft approaches its destination, so that the 'human Pilot 'can take over from the 'auto pilot' and land the plane safely. Often I pray that I do not fly in a plane that will be flown by the auto pilot. And a friend told me, it is inevitable, given that I fly often and that I was most likely to be flown by an auto pilot if I was doing the long haul across the Atlantic or the Pacific. In which case, I began to pray that if I must be flown by an auto pilot, then the human Pilots should please be awake and even if they need to sleep, then they should take turns to sleep so that one of the Pilots must be awake at any given time. I am told that the co-pilot can fly the plane like the captain and in front of both are replica of the same flying equipment.    Part of my concerns on the auto pilot option,...

RESTRUCTURING NIGERIA: WAITING FOR TINUBU & BUHARI

It is so gratifying that Nigerians are coming to a consensus on the need to restructure the Country. It has been long in coming. The cry first started after June 12 1993. NADECO fired the first shots and PRONACO took on the main fight. Major proponents were the Yoruba of the South West with support from the South south and the South East. The leading lights of this struggle included Chief Anthony Enahoro, Adekunle Ajasin, Professor Wole Soyinka, Dr Beko Ransome Kuti, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chief Ayo Opadokun, Chief Oluwide Omojola, Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Dr Kalu Idika Kalu and Olawale Okunniyi. The Yoruba Socio-political organization AFENIFERE has since stayed on it, with rising and falling tempo.   To lower or fully stop the agitation for a National Sovereign Conference which would restructure Nigeria, the North granted the West the 'right' to produce the replacement for Abiola. The Northern establishment led by Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar anointed ...

ANAMBRA STATE LEADS IN THE RE-INDUSTRIALIZATION OF THE SOUTH EAST

When most Nigerians think about the South East, they think of a people who are mostly traders. Most Nigerian narrative describe the Igbo as traders or at best as business men. They may be right. But that is really not the whole story. The Igbo are more than traders.   Those who are old enough and who are familiar with Nigerian history before the Nigeria- Biafra war and whose minds have not been biased by the trending characterization of the Igbo as itinerant traders in Nigeria, will admit that among the Igbo were the earliest political and Nation Builders who fought and brought Independence to Nigeria. The Story of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe is fairly well known. Perhaps not as much are the contributions of Dr Akanu Ibiam,Dr. Michael Okpara,Dennis Osadebay, Louis Mbanefo, Mazi Mbonu Ojike, Alvan Ikoku, Kingsley Ozurumba Mbadiwe, Abyssinia Nwafor Orizu, Jaja Nwachukwu, Aja Wachuku and Mbazulike Amaechi( the boy is good).Great Nationalists who were ably succeeded by some o...

AREWA YOUTHS ESCALATE DISCOURSE ON RESTRUCTURING NIGERIA

Last week I raised some issues on the Biafra struggle and opined that the Igbo have demonstrated that they loved this country and wanted its unity more than any other ethnic group in Nigeria. I further opined that indeed it looked to me that deep down,Nigeria did not really want the Igbo, but was merely tolerating them. And I concluded with offering my suggestion that if the Acting President and indeed this Government wanted true unity, the shortest cut was to try and look at all the reports submitted by PRONACO, the 2005 National Political reform conference and the 2014 National conference. In them, we can find good ideas on  how to make this arrangement workable and mutually beneficial.   The next day, a motley group of sponsored youth groups, generally classified as Arewa youths, spoke from Arewa House in Kaduna. I have found time to read their press releases(1st and 2nd) and I have also followed comments made by other Arewa leaders especially Prof Ango Abdullahi...
